Lá na hEorpa, 2024

Ar an 9 Bealtaine gach bliain déanann ballstáit an Aontais Lá na hEorpa a cheiliúradh. Agus síniú fhorógra Schuman in 1950 á chomóradh, is lá é chun machnamh ar an gcomhoibriú, ar an rathúnas agus ar an tsíocháin atá tar éis teacht chun cinn de dheasca an tionscadail Eorpaigh.

This year, Europe Day takes place as citizens across the continent prepare to vote in elections for their representatives in the European Parliament.

#UseYourVote in electing your European Parliament

Democracy in Europe is a gift passed to us from previous generations but it must be maintained, and the most effective way to do this is by voting. Take the opportunity on 7 June to #UseYourVote as Ireland elects its MEPs.

In celebrating Europe Day this year, the European Parliament Office in Dublin is partnering with the Houses of the Oireachtas to light up Leinster House and other locations to remind people of the importance of voting.

Enlarging Europe | Reflections

May 2024 is the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement, when the EU welcomed ten countries from central and eastern Europe as new member states.

In marking the event, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern came before the Committee on European Union Affairs for a debate marking the anniversary to reflect on this historic enlargment and the special "Day of Welcomes" that occurred while Ireland held the EU Presidency.

“If the Government fail to pursue this aim as thoroughly and as efficiently as we think is desirable, we will be pressing them from behind…It will do no harm to our position in Brussels and in this country if it is seen that this House is concerned about this matter.”

“Surely it is self-evident that if we were to remain outside the Community we would be conferring on the Border the status of a frontier, both economic and political, between ourselves and the rest of Europe.”
