Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts & the Gaeltacht Committee resumes hearings on sustaining viable rural communities

25 Oct 2016, 15:43

The Committee on Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht will resume its hearings on what it takes to sustain a viable rural community when it meets with representatives from Enterprise Ireland; Irish Farmers Association; Irish Small and Medium Enterprises; Small Firms Association; Western Development Commission; Údarás na Gaeltachta

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Peadar Tóibín said: “There is a deep imbalance in the distribution of jobs, enterprise and resources in this State causing major difficulties in urban and rural areas. Developing sustainable enterprises, improving tourism opportunities, promoting and encouraging agribusiness and creating jobs are crucial in halting population decline and in sustaining rural communities. Tomorrow we will continue our hearings on what it takes to sustain a viable rural community when we will get the perspectives of a number of business, farming and community development organisations. Members will have an opportunity to examine with these groups the measures necessary to strengthen and diversify the rural economy and create jobs.”

This meeting will start at 2.15pm, tomorrow, Wednesday, 26 October 2016 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
