Vol. 83 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Firewood for Bailieborough Residents.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has received a request from the Bailieborough Parish Council in connection with timber which is being cut on the demesne at Bailieborough, and if he is prepared to allow a certain quantity of this timber to be reserved for firewood and sold at an economic price to the poor during the coming winter.

The Bailieborough Parish Council have proposed that the Department should store 100 tons of timber on their own premises and allow the council to sell it during the winter to "deserving poor people at a reasonable price", the proceeds to be handed to the Department. The actual position is that a small power-driven, cross-cutting outfit has been located at Bailieborough forest and is turning out firewood blocks which are being sold locally at little more than the cost of conversion and in lots as small as one cwt.
