Vol. 114 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Operations.

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is intended to commence drainage operations upon any river other than the Brosna during the coming summer season and to state the names of the catchment areas where surveys are (a) completed; (b) nearly completed; (c) in operation; (d) about to commence this year; and further, if he will state the maximum number of men likely to be employed in the coming season on drainage operations.

The design of the scheme for the Glyde and Dee catchment in the Counties of Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan is practically complete and work will commence as soon as the legal formalities of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, have been complied with. Surveys of the Feale, Lee (Kerry) and Akeragh-Lough Banna catchments have been completed, and the design work on the Feale is proceeding rapidly. A survey of the Corrib is at present on hands. I am not in a position at this stage to indicate the catchment areas in which further surveys may be undertaken this year. It is estimated that up to 350 men will be employed on the Brosna scheme during the coming year.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say when these legal formalities will be completed with regard to the Glyde and Dee drainage scheme?

As soon as possible.
