Vol. 134 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Demobilisation White Paper.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that ex-Army personnel fear that the Government proposes to withdraw the White Paper on demobilisation and resettlement published in 1945; and, if so, if he will give an assurance that the guarantees therein given to such personnel will not be dishonoured.

I have heard nothing to suggest that ex-Army personnel suffer from the fear suggested.

The guarantees referred to by the Deputy have been honoured.

Mr. O'Higgins

Would the Minister give an undertaking to the House that they will continue to be honoured? The question refers to a possible cancellation of the White Paper published in 1945. Can he give an undertaking that that will not take place?

No, I cannot.

Mr. O'Higgins

Do I understand the Minister to give that undertaking?

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Defence whether the Government proposes to make provision for the resettlement on demobilisation of ex-members of the Defence Forces who are not covered by the 1945 White Paper.

The Government has approved a scheme of concessions for soldiers of the Permanent Force who enlist during the period from the 1st January, 1951, to the 31st March, 1953, in securing State employment after the termination of their Army engagements.

It is not intended to make provision otherwise for the resettlement of ex-members of the forces who are not covered by the 1945 White Paper.

Mr. O'Higgins

I wish to give notice, Sir, that I propose to raise the subject matter of Questions Nos. 28 and 29 on the Adjournment.
