Vol. 215 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Employment Allowances.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will substantially increase the rateable allowance, now at £17 per agricultural labour employee, to meet the increased overhead charges that farmers have to contend with.

No change is at present contemplated in the legislation enacted last year for the relief of rates on agricultural land in the period up to 31st March, 1967.

Does the Minister consider that the sum of £17 is still a realistic sum in view of the fact it has remained the same during the past ten years?

One might also ask the question as to whether it was ever a realistic sum, and the only way to find the answer is to put up a proposal to take it away, when it will be found to be a very realistic sum.

Does the Minister think that £17 per year is any inducement to keep a farm worker?

I do not believe it is.

Therefore, would the Minister not consider increasing it?

The Deputy and the House are aware of the number of times and the total extent Bills aimed at the relief of rates have come before the House. While issue may be taken that the sum is not adequate, I think the total amount granted in rates relief is very substantial indeed.

One of the things the Minister should do is to try to keep the people on the land.

It is not talking about the matter that will cure it.
