Vol. 253 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Service Medals and Special Allowances.

51.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider amending the relevant regulations so that applicants for service medals and special allowances who can prove active service prior to 31st March, 1921, but who for various domestic reasons were unable to be on active service for the three months prior to 11th July, 1921, may qualify.

I do not propose to amend the regulations as suggested by the Deputy.

52.

asked the Minister for Defence why a person (details supplied) in County Kerry has been held to have been unduly awarded a service medal.

The Service (1917-21) Medal awarded to the person referred to by the Deputy was held not to have been duly awarded because, on the person's own statement, he was absent from duty as a member of Oglaigh na hÉireann (IRA) during the period of three months ended on 11th July, 1921, which is the critical period for the purpose of determining entitlement to a Service Medal.
