Vol. 301 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish-Speaking National Schools.

563.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the number of Irish-speaking national schools recognised as such by his Department, (b) the total number of national school teachers employed in such schools, (c) the total number of pupils enrolled in such schools, (d) the number of such schools which have availed of grants towards school building costs from his Department, and (e) the maximum percentage subsidy which his Department pays to defray the cost of renting temporary premises for such schools, in the last school year for which these figures are available.

The position in respect of the school-year ended the 30th June, 1977, is (a) 18, (b) 120, (c) 3,086, (d) 16, (e) normally 50 per cent but 75 per cent in exceptional cases. Seven of these schools are model schools in which cases the Department would defray the full cost of renting temporary premises.
