Vol. 320 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Religious Education Teaching.

2.

asked the Minister for Education if he intends to change the employment terms of national school teachers in relation to the teaching of religious education and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Representations have not been made to me to change the conditions of employment of national school teachers in so far as religious instruction is concerned. I have no plans for any change in the conditions of teachers in that regard.

Is the Minister aware of the decision of the recent conference in this regard, and if representations were made to him by the INTO for a change what would his position be?

I am aware of this from newspaper reports only. The second part of the question is hypothetical and I am unable to answer it.

Is the Minister in favour of a change in the present employment terms in this respect?

When proposals come to me I shall consider them on their merits.

In view of what the INTO conference decided is the Minister satisfied that the present arrangement should continue?

I have no doubt that the INTO, on foot of what they decided, will approach me on the matter with proposals.

Is the Minister stating what he intends to do in this matter?

No, he is not.

Question No. 3 postponed.
