Vol. 322 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Service.

16.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if his attention has been drawn to the complaints of postal delays, in excess of two weeks, in respect of letters posted in Belfast; and the steps he is taking to rectify matters.

There was abnormal delay recently to mail posted in Belfast for addresses here following the destruction of a railway bridge, but service has since been restored to normal. Ordinarily such mail can be delayed up to 24 hours because of the curtailment of rail service arising from the security situation, but a delay of the order mentioned by the deputy should not occur. If the Deputy can furnish particulars of the cases he has in mind, I should be glad to have them investigated with haste.

Has the Minister had complaints of a similar nature?

I have had numerous such complaints. How does the Minister reconcile his statement in regard to a 24-hour delay with two week delays, which are frequent?

I am most anxious to help, if I can.
