Vol. 323 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Ireland-Chile Trade .

13.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism if he will outline the trading contacts, if any, that have taken place between Ireland and Chile through the agency of Córas Tráchtála or the IDA; and if, in view of the repressive nature of the regime in Chile, he will ensure that no trade is promoted between Chile and Ireland or Ireland and Chile in support of the demands for a trade boycott which have emanated from the Chilean Trade Union Congress.

: The agencies mentioned by the Deputy have no trading contacts with Chile and have no plans for such contacts.

: I am glad to hear that. In view of the statement made in the House last week by the Minister's colleague, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, will he formally communicate with both agencies to ensure that they do not at a date subsequent to now attempt to promote such contacts?

: The most important factor with regard to Chilean trade would be the state of the Chilean economy and from what one gathers there is no immediate prospect of any significant trade for that reason.

: While I appreciate that would the Minister bring to the notice of CTT and the IDA the statement issued in the House by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, which I presume was on the Minister's behalf, last week?

: I will ask them to read what the Minister said.
