asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give a list of the capital projects carried out in Cork city and county in each of the years from 1981 to 1985, inclusive; and if he will value each project.
Written Answers. - Cork Capital Projects.
Limerick East): In the years 1981 to 1985 capital projects undertaken by State bodies under the aegis of my Department were as follows. The Department itself did not undertake projects of this nature.
(1) National Micro-Electronics Research Centre:
This centre which was opened in 1981 is located at University College Cork. In addition to its training role, the centre provides infrastructural support, including research for the micro-electronics industry in Ireland. Up to end 1985 the cost of the capital expenditure programme on industry-related facilities at the centre amounted to £2.233 million.

(2) Nítrigin Éireann Teo (NET):
The capital expenditure as set out hereunder for the years 1981 to 1985 was used on improvements and overhauls to the NET Marino Point project in Cork. No actual new jobs were created but casual employment was supplied during the overhauls.

(3) Irish Steel Ltd.:
Capital expenditure by Irish Steel Limited in the period 1981 to 1985 inclusive related to the major development project carried out at the Haulbowline plant between 1978 and 1981 and the purchase of various items of equipment for improving plant efficiency. Expenditure in each of the years 1981 to 1985 inclusive amounting to £24,320,000 is set out as follows:

In addition to this capital expenditure by Irish Steel Limited in the period, a grant of £25 million was provided from the Vote of the Department of Industry and Energy in 1982 to enable the company to repay short term borrowings. In 1985 a further grant of £5 million was provided to Irish Steel for the purpose of reducing its debt service burden. This latter amount was converted into share capital within the terms of the Irish Steel Limited (Amendment) Act, 1985.
(4) Institute for Industrial Research and Standards:
A capital sum amounting to £1.111 million was expended on the establishment of the institute's southern regional centre at Ross Avenue, Cork. The centre employs 16 people and provides services in relation to concrete technology, industrial energy, manufacturing engineering and acoustics as well as providing a regional industrial liaison service on the institute's services generally. Expenditure in each of the years 1981 to 1985 is set out as follows:

(5) Industrial Development Authority:
The IDA's annual reports which are in the Dáil Library, contain an analysis of capital expenditure and grant payments to individual companies in County Cork. In addition, details of capital expenditure on the provision of land and building in the county are also provided.
The table below lists the pages from the annual reports from which the details for County Cork can be obtained. Similar information for the year 1985 will be contained in the IDA's annual report for 1985 which will be published shortly.
