The powers of detention following arrest provided for by the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 came into effect on 1 July 1987. Statistics on the operation of the Act are compiled on a six-monthly basis. The number of persons detained in the period 1 July — 31 December 1987 was 1,938. The number of persons detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 during the same period was 1,302.
