Vol. 385 No. 4

Written Answers. - Innovation in Secondary Education Programme.

26.

asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the proposals currently being made by the European Commission for a work programme aimed at encouraging innovation in secondary education; and the likely participation of Ireland in this programme.

The matter to which the Deputy refers is a Commission Work Programme on the promotion of innovation in secondary education in the European Community communicated to the Council in mid-October. The programme sets out a wide range of actions for member states under six broad headings which were identified as priority areas as a result of the two series of pilot projects on transition from school to adult and working life. Supporting or supplementary actions by the Commission are also included in the programme. These actions, by both the member states and the Commission, will be reflected in a resolution on innovation in secondary education which will be prepared in consultation with the Education Committee and which will be submitted to Community Education Ministers at their meeting in the first half of 1989. The purpose of this resolution will be to seek to exploit fully within second level school systems the results and experiences of the pilot projects mentioned above and we will be participating fully in work at community level to this end.

The Commission Work Programme is a fairly detailed document and so I propose to make a copy available to the Deputy.
