Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Mildred Fox

Ceist:

188 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice if she will consider increasing the number of gardaí in Bray, County Wicklow, during the summer months; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9650/96]

The allocation of Garda personnel and resources is the responsibility of the Garda authorities.

While Bray attracts an influx of tourists and day trippers during the summer months, the Garda authorities inform me that the existing policing arrangements for the Bray area are adequate to meet the policing needs of the area. At present there are no plans to increase the number of gardaí allocated to Bray Garda station. The Garda authorities assure me, however, that these arrangements are kept under continual review and any adjustment considered necessary during the summer months will be made.

Ceist:

189 Ms M. Fox asked the Minister for Justice if she will consider appointing an extra garda to the Glendalough area in County Wicklow in view of the vast number of tourists who visit this area every summer; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9651/96]

The allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that Glendalough is policed by the gardaí attached to Rathdrum Garda station. The strength of Rathdrum Garda station was increased by one garda in February 1996 bringing it to its current strength of one sergeant and three gardaí. The patrol car allocated to Rathdrum station is utilised in patrolling the sub-district including the Glendalough area. Policing of the area is augmented as required by personnel from the adjoining stations of Roundwood, Avoca and Aughrim. Attention is also paid to the area by the divisional traffic corps and detective unit patrols from Wicklow Garda station.

I understand from the Garda authorities that they are satisfied that the current deployment of personnel in the Glendalough area is adequate to meet the policing needs of the area.
