Vol. 491 No. 6

Written Answers. - Drug Treatment Services.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

172 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of persons receiving treatment at the City Clinic, Amien Street, Dublin 1; the number who have progressed to an aftercare or rehabilitation project; and the plans, if any, there are to make adequate provision for aftercare services. [12719/98]

The provision of treatment and aftercare services to drug misusers at the City Clinic in Dublin 1 is a matter for the Eastern Health Board in the first instance.

The Eastern Health Board has informed my Department that the current number of persons in receipt of treatment at City Clinic is 231. From the information provided by the board it is not possible to give a total figure for the number of people who have progressed to an aftercare or rehabilitation project. However, the following information, which has been supplied by the board, may be useful to the Deputy.
Aftercare and rehabilitation are provided at the following centres:—

It is estimated that to date 30 former clients have progressed to employment.
The Eastern Health Board is in the process of expanding rehabilitation and aftercare services linked with the Amiens Street Clinic in order to provide such services to stabilised drug misusers at the earliest possible stage and to encourage these people to return to a normal lifestyle.

Ceist:

173 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health and Children the after hours arrangements that can be made to attend the City Clinic, Dublin 1, where the persons concerned are in employment and cannot obtain weekly leave. [12720/98]

The Eastern Health Board which is responsible for the provision of services to drug misusers in the City Clinic, Amiens Street, Dublin 1, has informed my Department that arrangements are made on an individual basis for those in employment who cannot attend the clinic during normal opening hours to obtain a service between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday. The health board believes the number of attenders in this category does not at present justify an evening clinic, but the matter is being kept under review.

Ceist:

174 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health and Children if there is an eight week waiting period for persons seeking treatment at the City Clinic, Dublin 1; and the plans, if any, there are to provide a crisis intervention service for addicts over 18 years who present themselves for urgent treatment. [12721/98]

The Eastern Health Board, which is responsible for the provision of services in the City Clinic, Amiens Street, has informed me that there is at present no waiting list for methadone treatment at the clinic. Emergency assessments are provided at the clinic on one afternoon per week. A needs assessment is currently being carried out to establish if a daily crisis intervention service is needed.
