The European Regional Development Fund operational programme for tourism 1994-1999 has provided funding for the restoration works to the Royal Canal. It is expected that the waterway will be navigable from Dublin to Abbeyshrule this year. However, a number of major works have to be undertaken west of Abbeyshrule including the replacement of six road bridges on the main line in County Longford. I will be seeking the necessary funding to complete full restoration of the canal to the Shannon under the next round of Structural Funds.
