Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - Consumer Protection.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

97 Mr. Gilmore asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she has satisfied herself with the current level of protection available to consumers who use low cost airlines; when it is expected to regulate airlines which do not include, for instance, additional costs; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26561/00]

I intend to take legislative action to improve the level of consumer protection in relation to advertisements for airfares.

Using the powers at my disposal under the Consumer Information Act, 1978, which enable me to require certain information to be included in advertisements for goods and services, I expect to be signing an order within a matter of weeks requiring consumers to be accurately informed about the full price of airline tickets.

Following industry-wide consultations, my Department sent a proposed text of the order to the Attorney General's office for legislative drafting. I understand that the necessary work will be completed by the end of this month, thereby paving the way for me to bring the order into law.
