Vol. 526 No. 4

Written Answers. - FÁS Training Programmes.

John Browne

Ceist:

166 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the plans she has to review the accommodation allowance provided to FÁS apprentices; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [26654/00]

According to FÁS the current accommodation allowance of £27.50 per week can result in many instances of apprentices refusing to take up available places. This is disruptive to the effective planning of courses and to the apprentice concerned. It is also another major factor interfering with the seamless progress of apprentices through the various phases. In reviewing the situation FÁS has made comparisons have with the position in Teagasc, CERT, and private Industry and others. FÁS has made a submission to me on the issue, and I hope to come to a decision in the very near future.

Question No. 167 taken with Question No. 78.
