Vol. 562 No. 6

Written Answers - Health Professionals Regulation.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

129 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children his proposals to meet the serious concerns of the Irish Association of Physical Therapists in regard to legislation being drafted to introduce a system for the regulation and supervision of the health and social care professions (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6860/03]

Action 105 of the health strategy commits my Department to strengthening and expanding provisions for statutory registration of health professionals. In this context, legislation is being prepared to establish a system of statutory registration for health and social care professionals.

In drafting the legislation further advice and examination will be required of the many complex legal, competition and public interest issues that arise, including in relation to protection of title.

The Deputy may wish to note that representatives of the Irish Association of Physical Therapy have requested a meeting with officials of my Department which is scheduled to take place later this month.
