Deputy Neasa Hourigan asked the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth his plans to help promote the availability of easy to read and accessible menus in restaurants for persons with intellectual disabilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. However, I am aware that the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design at the National Disability Authority, which is an agency under the remit of my Department, worked with the National Standards Authority of Ireland to produce the ‘Design Standard For All’ (I.S. EN 17161:2019). The standard is a guide for businesses on Universal Design.
The Standard sets out the requirements on an organisation to ensure it meets its statutory and regulatory requirements in terms of accessibility to its products, goods and services and advises on how products, and services can be accessed, understood and used by a wide range of people, including older persons and persons with disabilities.
In addition, the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design has also produced a "Universal Design for Customer Engagement Toolkit" which provides comprehensive best practice guidance on achieving better customer communication in tourism services.
