The Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht has welcomed a commitment from the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan, TD to produce a roadmap with regard to the creation of climate change legislation. Heads of the Bill are expected to be introduced before the end of next year.
Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “We are heartened by the Minister’s commitment at our meeting yesterday to provide a roadmap for the introduction of climate change legislation and welcome his pledge to introduce the Heads of the Climate change Bill by the end of 2012.
The roadmap will provide clear and measurable goals to achieve climate change targets which will enable Ireland to meet its 2020 targets. This timetable will provide the necessary certainty on this issue and will also help inform an overall climate change policy which will eventually culminate in the Heads of a Bill by the end of next year. The Minister’s commitment is a major step forward in this country’s efforts to formulate a policy and legislation to combat climate change.
The Committee would like to thank the Minister for attending yesterday’s meeting to outline the Government’s climate change priorities. It was a very frank, useful and engaging meeting and we are happy that this matter is getting the priority it deserves. We will continue to work with the Minister and his department in helping to formulate policy on this very important issue. We will also be very interested in hearing from interested parties who wish to contribute to the debate on the issue of formulating climate change legislation.”
