Hannigan elected European Union Affairs Committee Chairman

26 Ean 2012, 14:35

Dominic Hannigan, TD has been elected Chairman of the Committee on European Union Affairs.

Speaking after his election, Deputy Hannigan said: “I sincerely thank colleagues for electing me Chairman of the Committee on European Union Affairs. It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to chair this prominent and influential committee.

At this critical juncture for the European Union and Ireland’s role in it, the Committee is facing into an intensive period of work. The Government has agreed to keep the Committee briefed on the ongoing intergovernmental negotiations on the proposed Fiscal Compact and the Committee looks forward to engaging with the Government negotiators as the draft Treaty is finalised.”

“Whether a referendum is required or not, the Committee stands ready to connect the issues arising from the new Treaty with the Irish public in the coming months.

“Building on the sterling work by previous Chairman Joe Costello TD, the Committee will continue to play an indispensable role within our parliamentary system. Approximately half of legislation enacted in Ireland emanates from the European Union and our Committee, along with our colleagues in the Sectoral Committees, will ensure EU legislation and proposals are properly scrutinised.

\"As outgoing Chairman, I take this opportunity to thank my fellow Members of the Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. Comprising Members from the Oireachtas and MPs from Northern Ireland, this unique Committee is playing a key role in consolidating peace on the island. Reflecting the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement, the Committee Members have explored practical ways towards reconciliation and engaged with all traditions on the island. In recent months, we travelled beyond the gates of Leinster House to meet politicians and community groups in Northern Ireland and the border region. I wish the Committee well in continuing its vital work.\"
