Communications Committee proposes new member to RTÉ board

7 Noll 2016, 17:01

The Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment has proposed Eoin McVey to the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment for nomination to the board of RTÉ.

The Committee has a role in nominating individuals to the board of RTÉ. A casual vacancy left by the resignation of Pádraig Ó Céidigh following his decision to run for election to Seanad Éireann currently exists on the Board and in October the Committee invited expressions of interest from suitably qualified members of the public who would like to be considered for an upcoming appointment to the board of RTÉ.

The Committee proposes that the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughten TD should nominate Eoin McVey to the Board of RTÉ, in accordance with section 81(1)(b) of the Broadcasting Act 2009.

Following a competition, and engagement with a short list of candidates, the Joint Committee, at its meeting on 6 December 2016, agreed that Eoin McVey has experience of, or shown capacity in, the following matters in accordance with section 82 (1) of the Broadcasting Act 2009:

•    Knowledge and experience of media affairs;
•    Knowledge and experience of digital media technologies;
•    Knowledge and experience of trade union affairs;
•    Knowledge and experience of business or commercial affairs.

Mr McVey is a former managing editor and director at The Irish Times.
