Gender Equality Committee to hear from Women On Air, the 30% Club and the National Traveller Women’s Forum in relation to leadership in politics, public life and the workplace

19 DFómh 2022, 18:00

The Joint Committee on Gender Equality will meet on Thursday, October 20th to discuss recommendations 20-25 of the Citizens’ Assembly in relation to leadership in politics, public life and the workplace.

The report of the Citizens' Assembly on Gender Equality can be read in full here.

Representatives the 30% Club, Women on Air and the National Traveller Women’s Forum will address the meeting.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:00.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Ivana Bacik said: “We look forward to resuming our discussion on the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly in relation to leadership in politics, public life and the workplace.

“We welcome the chance to hear from the National Traveller Women’s Forum as their exclusion from decision making and the wider political process only serves to further marginalise their voices – particularly in our media and public discourse. We have heard calls for increased gender quotas in politics and in business yet with only one Traveller representative in the Oireachtas, it is clear that more needs to be done.”

“Women on Air works to ensure more women’s voices to are heard in the media and the 30% Club works to increase gender diversity at board and executive-committee levels.”

“When the Dáil debated the Citizens Assembly’s recommendations on gender equality last year, many deputies commended the 45 recommendations from the Assembly, some deputies highlighted a key obstacle – the lack of live, continuous data evaluating the extent of gender inequality in public life.

“We look forward to hearing the views of representatives on how best to implement the recommendations of the Assembly, such as gender quotas and reporting on gender equality and gender representation.”
