The Joint Committee on Justice to resume engagement with Garda Commissioner on Policing Matters

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 1:30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy James Lawless TD said “Today’s meeting comes on foot of the tragic attacks on the schoolchildren and their carer last Thursday on Parnell Street. The scenes of looting and violence in Dublin City Centre following those attacks are something this Committee found to be both shocking and unacceptable.

“We will look to get insights from the Garda Commissioner on what happened last Thursday and seek information on how he plans to ensure that the chaotic scenes we saw never happen again. Gardaí being isolated by gangs and suffering assaults, public transport being burned and shops and businesses being looted are not acceptable in our parliamentary democracy and as the Justice Committee, we will continue to support An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice in striving to make sure Ireland, its cities, towns and most importantly its people are kept safe.

“Our Committee is very aware of the impact that crime continues to have on society in Ireland. We visited the Garda Training College in Templemore last week and have held informative meetings recently with the Garda Representative Association, Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors and the Restaurants Association of Ireland on policing matters.”
