Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community to meet with Cork Traveller Visibility Group and National Traveller Women's Forum

6 Noll 2023, 16:20

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 7 December, to discuss Traveller accommodation matters with representatives from Cork Traveller Visibility Group and the National Traveller Women's Forum.

Speaking ahead of the meeting at 10:30am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Senator Eileen Flynn said: “The Committee looks forward to continuing our consideration of matters pertaining to accommodation with representatives of the National Traveller Women’s Forum and the Traveller Visibility Group in Cork.

“Matters relating to the provision of accommodation have a direct impact on the entire Traveller Community. In addition, issues in accessing accommodation can also aggravate issues that are experienced more acutely by women in the Traveller Community.

“The Committee is particularly interested in hearing from our witnesses about the Caravan Loan Scheme, the changes it requires and the possible need for alternatives to it. Members are also interested in discussing the effectiveness of Traveller Accommodation Programmes and their implementation by local authorities.”

The Joint Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community (2023) has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad. The Committee was re-established in June 2023 to continue the work of the previous Committee, whose final report can be found here.

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
