The Committee on Budgetary Oversight chaired by Deputy Barry Cowen has published its Post-Budget 2024 Report in which it makes a series of recommendations on the issue.
Deputy Cowen said “Budget 2024, announced on 10 October 2023, has followed a series of extraordinary budgets that necessitated addressing challenges including a global pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, significant increases in energy prices and interest rates. Though some of these challenges have become less acute, the Budget has nonetheless taken place during a time of significant uncertainty regarding high interest rates, fluctuating energy prices, and significant increases in the cost of living.”
The Deputy said “The Committee makes its observations and recommendations in relation to both the budgetary package and the budgetary process that it believes should be taken into account throughout the Budget 2024 cycle and beyond.”
