Social Protection Committee to discuss energy poverty with representatives from St Vincent de Paul and Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)

16 Ean 2024, 15:57

The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands will meet on Wednesday January 17th for a discussion energy poverty, specifically in reference to the retrofitting of homes and suitability of fuel allowance to meet the needs of people both in urban and rural areas.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.

Representatives from Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and St Vincent de Paul will appear.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Denis Naughten said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the issue of energy poverty and fuel allowance.”

“Recent price cuts by some energy providers are welcome but energy poverty is a widespread issue that must be tackled within the context of meeting our climate action goals.

“Housing standards, income issues, and energy retail issues are interconnected, and must be tackled together as energy inefficient homes are more expensive to maintain and place a disproportionate financial burden on such households.”

“The need to include more homes within retrofitting strategies, income supports for energy efficiency and advice on conserving energy are among the topics we expect to discuss with representatives.”
