Enterprise Committee to discuss the regulatory and legislative changes required for the transposition of the adequate Minimum Wages Directive with IBEC and ICTU

23 Ean 2024, 16:22

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet on Wednesday January 24th to discuss the regulatory and legislative changes required for the transposition of the adequate Minimum Wages Directive.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 between 09:30-12:30.

Representatives from Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC) and ICTU will appear at the Committee.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said; “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the regulatory and legislative changes required for the transposition of the adequate Minimum Wages Directive.

The EU Directive on Adequate Minimum Wages seeks to reduce working poverty and inequality by improving the adequacy of statutory minimum wages as well as the promotion of collective bargaining. The Directive explicitly recognises that strong and inclusive collective bargaining systems play an important role in ensuring adequate minimum wage protection.

Ireland is obliged to present an action plan to the European Commission as part of its transposition of the Directive no later than November 2024. This action plan is about ensuring the autonomy of social partners and does not compel any party to engage in negotiations.

“We look forward to hearing the observations of the representatives on the directive.”
