Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to discuss Issues regarding Defective Block Scheme

26 Feabh 2024, 15:00

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet with key stakeholders tomorrow, Tuesday, 27 February, to discuss Issues regarding the Defective Block Scheme.

The meeting at 2:15pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from representatives from the Clare, Mayo and Donegal Pyrite Action Groups.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “The Enhanced Defective Concrete Blocks Grant Scheme was introduced by the Government in November 2021 to support affected homeowners to rectify their homes, where the building has been damaged by the use of defective concrete blocks in its construction. This introduced improvements to the previous scheme and included affected homeowners in a number of counties including Clare, Donegal and Mayo.

“Since the introduction of the enhanced scheme, affected homeowners in these counties have raised concerns around the implementation of the scheme, including delays in accessing funds and grants that fall short of 100 per cent redress. These and other issues with the scheme were raised with the Committee by the groups representing affected homeowners in Clare, Donegal and Mayo in previous meetings. The Committee welcomes this further engagement with these groups and looks forward to discussing their ongoing concerns and related matters.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
