Disability Matters Committee to discuss the UNCRPD and justice with representatives from the Courts Service and An Garda Siochána

The Joint Committee on Disability Matters will meet on Wednesday April 24th to discuss the UNCRPD and justice.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House between 17:30-20:30. 

 

 

The following representatives are due to appear:

Representatives from The Courts Service, Angela Denning, Chief Executive Officer & Tom Ward, Assistant Secretary, Superior Courts Operations Directorate

Representatives from An Garda Síochána, Padraic Jones, Chief Superintendent, Garda National Community Engagement Bureau, Seán Fallon, Superintendent & Pauline Glennon, Sergeant

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “We look forward to discussing how people with disabilities can access justice on an equal basis with everyone else.”

“The prevention of harm and protection of vulnerable people is a key component of policing and justice.”

“disability rights are sometimes seen as unrelated to enforcing the law, protecting the rights of those who have suffered injury or trauma; victims of crime, those with disabilities and those suspected of wrongdoing helps ensure a just outcome for all.”
