Vol. 272 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Discrimination.

19.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether discrimination based on nationality still exists in the EEC.

I assume that the Deputy refers to discrimination against persons who wish to take up employment or to establish themselves in a business or profession in another member state.

The position under Community legislation is that a worker is free to go to another member state to take up employment. He may also go to another member state to look for employment for a period of up to three months. Irish workers have the same rights in this respect as nationals of other member states. Ireland, however, retains control over the entry of workers from other member states up to the end of 1977. Britain retains control for the same period over entry of workers to Northern Ireland.

The position as regards right of establishment for self-employed persons is unchanged since I replied to the Deputy's question on 23rd October, 1973.
