Vol. 354 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cork City Violence.

624.

asked the Minister for Justice in the light of the recent increase in the crime wave of late, in both the north and south sides of Cork city, if he has made any provision to increase the number of gardaí on the beat or foot patrol in these areas.

Limerick East): The precise arrangements for the policing of particular areas are a matter for the Garda authorities and the allocation of Garda manpower between foot patrols and other duties in any particular area is a matter for the local Garda officers having regard to available resources, local circumstances and other demands on Garda services.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda officers at Union Quay and McCurtain Street, the district headquarters for the Cork city south and north districts respectively, fully recognise the importance of foot patrols in combating crime and that they are making every effort to provide for the maximum number of members on foot patrol, having regard to other commitments. Overall Garda strength in Cork city has been increased by 20 members in the current year and the strength and policing arrangements for the area will be kept under review.
