Vol. 224 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Gyro System.

36.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether the Post Office will soon provide a transfer-credit system and the Gyro system, as operated abroad by other postal services.

The possibilities of Gyro are under consideration. The indications are that the service would be expensive and complex, and, in view of the Department's other commitments, a decision to provide it soon is not likely.

May we take it that the Minister would not overlook the fact that the operation of such a system would attract business to the Post Office? If it is considered suitable for operation in post offices in other countries, what are the factors which would make it unsuitable in this country?

There are many things to be considered before a decision on this matter is taken. It might attract business to the Post Office, but it might substract it from other commercial concerns already operating it successfully. That is something that has to be considered. There are one thousand and one things involved.
