A period of six years was provided for in the EEC directive of 19 December 1978 for the progressive implementation of the principle of equal treatment for men and women in matters of social security. I have not decided upon a particular time scale within which to implement fully the provisions of the directive. The first steps have, however, already been taken in this direction and it is my intention to have the necessary measures for full compliance with the directive taken well within the time scale laid down.
