Vol. 320 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Sea Mesh Regulations.

95.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he proposes to consult the Irish Fishermen's Organisation in the harmonisation of mesh regulations governing the Irish Sea.

The Irish Fishermen's Organisation have already been consulted about the most recent proposals of the EEC Commission in regard to mesh regulations, which if adopted would bring about the harmonisation referred to.

Is there agreement between the organisation and the Minister and his Department in respect of the type of vessel to be used?

Yes, there have been discussions and they are aware of the need to harmonise. There is no conflict between the IFO and the Department with regard to the matter. Further consultations will be necessary if there are any further Commission proposals, but so far there has been very extensive consultation. The matter has been discussed with IFO representatives recently and the position explained to them fully. There are on-going consultations at the moment to ensure that this is done.

The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper for next Tuesday.
