Vol. 324 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Mentally Handicapped School.

20.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the situation in regard to the building of the new school for the mentally handicapped in Waterford; and if he is aware of the urgent need to commence building.

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that they await the submission by the school authorities of working drawings and specifications for the new Saint Martin's special national school in Waterford. Tenders for the demolition of an old building on the site are also awaited.

When these preliminaries have been completed the way will be clear for the provision of the new school at the earliest possible date.

May we have an assurance from the Minister that the building of the school will commence in 1981?

I am as anxious as the Deputy is that the building of this new school should be proceeded with as speedily as possible. He may rest assured that I am doing everything possible in this regard and I will keep in touch with him as to the progress which I hope will be made.
