Vol. 468 No. 4

Written Answers. - Scholarstown (Dublin) Site.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

488 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Education the number of the 11 acres at the site on Scholarstown Road, Knocklyon, Dublin 16, owned by her Department and purchased in 1982 for a post-primary school, that would be required for accommodating the proposed Gaelscoil Cnoc Liamhna; the space area of the site being considered; the type of building proposed; the likely commencement date; where the Gaelscoil will be accommodated from September 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15520/96]

I recently decided to grant provisional recognition to Gaelscoil Cnoc Liamhna, Knocklyon, Dublin 16. In accordance with established practice, the provision of accommodation for the gaelscoil during the period of provisional recognition is a matter for the promoters and I understand that, in this case, they intend to locate the school initially in the Scouts' Hall in Knocklyon. In the circumstances, there is no immediate requirement for a permanent site for the school. Normally, a gaelscoil would get provisional recognition in the first instance and would be in operation for a few years before its viability can be confirmed and permanent recognition granted. It is only at this stage that the school could apply for capital grant-aid towards the purchase of a site and the provision of a school building. A general guideline for primary school sites gives a requirement of around 2.5 acres for an 8-room school and three acres for a 16-room school. I intend to monitor the progress of the new gaelscoil closely and will consider what action is appropriate in relation to the site on Scholarstown Road in that context.
