Health boards and public voluntary hospitals are funded by my Department for a wide range of services covering in many cases both regional and national specialties. The management of services and the associated budgets is a matter for each health board and hospital. While patients are referred from one hospital to another for treatment, tests, etc, there are no public hospitals in general which have a specific block of funding provided by my Department related to another hospital which may be using its services. It might be noted, however, that the effective determination of the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin, incorporating the National Children's Hospital, includes a sum of £3.916 million in respect of the Federated Dublin Voluntary Hospitals. Also, in regard to the 1999 waiting list initiative, there is scope for an agency to reach agreement with another agency to carry out procedures on their behalf in order to maximise available capacity within the system.
