The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet today, Wednesday, 24th April 2024 at 1:30pm for discussion on issues relating to road safety with representatives from the Road Safety Authority and then separately to discuss issues affecting Driver Testers with representatives from FÓRSA Trade Union in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.

Session 1. 1:30pm – 3:30pm

·       Representatives from the Road Safety Authority

Session 2. 3:30pm – 4:30pm

·       Representatives from FÓRSA Trade Union

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Leas-Chathaoirleach Senator Gerry Horkan said: “Today the Committee will continue its engagement on the on-going national issues impacting our roads and roads users. With the RSA we will seek as much detail as possible on why road accidents are continuing to occur at such increased frequency and where progress can be made in addressing these accidents and unfortunate fatalities to ultimately eliminate such tragedies that persist on our roads.

“Our Committee will take the opportunity to re-emphasise our message that enforcement is a key area that needs to be enhanced, along with driver education and the use of technology to reduce road deaths and injuries.

“We also look forward to our engagement with FÓRSA to get their input on issues affecting Driving Testers and what plans and strategies they would recommend to our Committee so that we can bring these first-hand perspectives on the challenges they are experiencing to the National Driver Licence Service and the Department.”

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications  has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
